Sixteen Afghan civilians have reportedly been murdered by a lone US soldier who suffered what is being described as a 'mental breakdown'.
The soldier reportedly entered three Afghan family’s homes in Alkozai village, Kandahar at or around 3AM this morning and simply shot down whomever he found inside. An Afhan who claimed to be an eyewitness said that he then 'poured chemicals over their dead bodies and burned them.'
The U.S service member, identified as an Army staff sergeant is said to have surrendered to U.S. military authorities after the killings, and is currently in their custody.
Lt. Gen Adrian Bradshaw, deputy commander of NATO-led forces, said he was unable to "explain the motivation behind such callous acts", adding that "our thoughts and prayers are with those caught in this tragedy".
Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the rampage as "intentional murders" and "assassinations" and demanded that the killer be turned over to the Afghans to be tried under their laws.
You can just imagine what will ensue if a US soldier is examined, actually did suffer a nervous breakdown and is found mentally incompetent to stand trial.
There's the difference. We try and punish our murderers, no matter whom they've killed. The Afghans don't even consider the men who murdered 6 soldiers over a Q'uran burning to even be murderers.
There's a great deal that's revealed by just that simple fact.
