The smiling gentleman above is Bob Caldwell, 63, editor of The Oregonian’s prize winning editorial pages for over 20 years.

He passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest after what was described as a 'sex act' with a 23-year-old woman in her Tigard, Oregon apartment.

From what the woman, a student at Portland Community College told police, she started hopping into bed with Caldwell over a year ago, and that the deal was essentially money for school books and other necessary items in exchange for sex.

Police are not going to charge her with prostitution because, wait for it ... Caldwell was unable to pay her on that particular day, for obvious reasons.

Caldwell left a wife and children, who amid their grief can be sure of one thing..he died happy and went out with a real bang.

Farewell To The Big "E" - The USS Enterprise Goes On It's Final Mission

Tomorrow, March 11th, the fabled USS Enterprise sets out on its 22nd and last deployment, sailing from its home port of Norfolk Virginia to the Middle East. The aircraft carrier has been in service to our flag and country for a record 52 years, albeit with a major facelift and renovation for the old girl in 1979.

The Enterprise is bound for a seven-month deployment, where it will be on standby in case of problems with Iran, among other things.

Following its return to Virginia in the fall, there will be a deactivation ceremony on December 1st. President Barack Obama has been invited to attend, on which I'll reserve comment. After the ceremony, the Enterprise will be towed back to its birthplace, the Newport News shipyard where it was built so that its nuclear fuel can be removed, a process that will reportedly take until 2015. After that, the hulk will be taken to Washington state so it can be scrapped.

The Enterprise, named after her famous WWII namesake was built in 1960. She was America's first nuclear powered carrier, and hosts a record number of 8 onboard reactors. The ship has participated in US military actions from the Cuban Missile Crisis to Vietnam to the Persian Gulf.

When the Enterprise first joined our fleet in October of 1961, she was one of 24 carriers, and the only nuclear-powered carrier, in a Navy of 870 ships. Today she is one of 11 nuclear-powered carriers in a Navy of 285 ships.

Will there be another Enterprise? Perhaps. This is the eighth American ship to bear the name. Her immediate predecessor, the USS Enterprise was the most decorated ship in World War II, while the first Enterprise joined the U.S. fleet after it was captured from the British in 1775.

Huntsman's Out

Republican presidential candidate Jon M. Huntsman Jr. will announce tomorrow that he's dropping out of the GOP presidential race. He's also going to announce his endorsement of Governor Mitt Romney, something that won't mean much in South Carolina but that definitely will make a difference elsewhere. He finished third in New Hampshire.

While I agree with Huntsman's motives - he realizes that he has no chance of his own and wants to help Romney, perhaps in exchange for a quid pro quo if Romney wins - I'm rather sorry he's leaving the fray this early. He's an intelligent, sensible man with a lot of good ideas I found appealing, especially when it came to the economy, trade policy, and China and the Far East.

Here's hoping we see his gifts used in a different capacity.

What I always liked about his stuff was the way that he combined his sensibilities with the fervor of an articulate conservative and a naturalized American citizen.

His columns on national security issues were always a particular favorite of mine, He had an almost instinctive feel for these matters and you always came away with a fresh perspective. And he was one of a select group of people who have not only an innate understanding of American politics but the ability to communicate it.

He'll be missed.

Leaving The Building: Senator Ben Nelson retires

Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) has decided to retire.

One of the more moderate Democrats, he was facing an uphill battle for re-election in the Cornhusker State because of his votes in favor of ObamaCare, and the special deal he made for his vote to have the feds pay for medicaid in his home state got dubbed the 'Cornhusker Kickback' and did not play well back home.

Nelson's retirement virtually guarantees a Republican victory in 2012. There no significant Democrat capable of mounting a challenge to any of the major GOP candidates.

"This virtually guarantees a Republican victory in 2012," said University of Nebraska Lincoln political scientist Mike Wagner. "There's almost no scenario in which a Democrat can win -- especially at this late stage."

The Republicans need four seats to take control of the Senate, and Nelson, 70, joins joins several other Democrats to retire from the Senate, including Virginia's Jim Webb, Wisconsin's Herb Kohl, Hawaii's Daniel Akaka, New Mexico's Jeff Bingaman, and North Dakota's Kent Conrad. Only one Republican, Arizona's John Kyl will not be running in 2012.

The Democrats have 23 seats to defend in the next election, versus 10 for the GOP.

Christopher Hitchens has died, after a long battle with esophageal cancer. It's ironic, in a way that Hitchens might appreciate that someone so known for his rhetoric and speaking ability would finally succumb in this way.

Herman Cain: The Show's Over

Herman Cain officially ended his presidential campaign today.

OK, he 'suspended' it,but the show's over.

He made the announcement in his home town of Atlanta,with, of course, his wife Gloria onstage with him.

He said the allegations have cast a "cloud of doubt over me and this campaign."

"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," he said. "I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt . . . on me, on my family, not because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter."

"I have made many mistakes in life -- everybody has. I made mistakes professionally, personally, as a candidate, in terms of how I run my campaign. And I take responsibility or the mistakes that I have made," he said. "But because of these false and unproved accusations, it has … had a tremendous painful price on my family."

Of course, it wasn't just the allegations of adultery or sexual harassment that did Herman Cain in. it was his obvious ignorance of anything outside of a very narrow focus, his disastrous ( albeit catchy) '999 plan', his gaffe ridden public utterances and his poorly run campaign.

A recent Iowa poll showed his support plummeting to less than 8% and falling.

Cain says Cain said he will be launching "plan B" of his public career, a new website where he will discuss economic and get this, foreign policy issues. I'm certain his book will also be for sale onsite, if you can't find it at your local thrift shop or garage sale.He also said he's planning to endorse a Republican candidate for president "in the near future."

A presidential campaign is also a job interview, or at least it should be. Americans have already seen the result of putting a man with no experience and no discernible qualifications into the White House, and there's no benefit in repeating that mistake.

It will be interesting to see where his support goes. I would personally guess that Michele Bachmann and perhaps Newt Gingrich would be the chief beneficiaries.

Barney Frank Calls It Quits, No Effs, Ends or Butts

Veteran Congressperson Barney Frank has decided to retire. The chief reason was that his specially gerrymandered district is no more, because Massachusetts lost a seat due to the last census.

Frank had a tough fight last time against Sean Bielat in 2010, even though he ultimately won after spending a great deal of money. With a redrawn district and a very different political climate thanks to President Obama's unpopularity, he decided to pull the plug, no double entendre intended.

Barney Frank will be remembered for a number of choice items:

'Recommending' his boyfriend for a lucrative senior executive job at Fannie Mae while Frank served on a key post in the House Finance Committee. And his subsequent shielding of his boyfriend's employer from congressional oversight or regulation when questions began to be raised about Fannie and Freddie's mismanagement that ultimately resulted in the mortgage bubble and the toxic derivatives that spread through the economy. And yes, some people have raised the possibility that there was a quid pro quo there, or undue influence at the very least

The ridiculous Dodd-Frank Financial "reform" bill that left Fannie and Freddie untouched while effectively constraining economic activity during a recession and raising fees on the very consumers it was supposed to protect

Being censored by the House for allowing another boyfriend to run a gay prostitution ring out of Frank's home, something that would have landed an ordinary person in the slammer for a few years.

He never found a far left cause he wouldn't support or a taxpayer's dollar he didn't have his greedy little eyes on.

President Obama commented today on Frank's resignation, saying, “This country has never had a congressman like Barney Frank, and the House of Representatives will not be the same without him.”

G-d willing.

However, in fairness, I have to mention one time when Congressman Frank impressed me with his courage. When CNN chief news executive and Leftist talking head Eason Jordan made remarks about how the US military was targeting journalists for murder at the World Economic Forum at Davos in 2005, it was Barney Frank who demanded that Jordan back up his words with proof and led the charge that resulted in Jordan's 'resigning'. Jordan, by the way, was also the one who revealed that CNN slanted coverage and deliberately kept quiet about Saddam Hussein's atrocities in Iraq prior to Desert Storm to maintain 'access to the story'. For that alone, Jordan deserves the Duranty award for abjectly soiling whatever journalistic ethics he may once have had and aiding and abetting the murder of innocents.

Oh, and by the way..while it's good news that Frank is resigning, the next person due to take over as ranking member of the finance committee is race baiter and outright communist Maxine Waters. That is, if she survives her current ethics problems.

Two Quotes On Our Iraq Withdrawal

One frustrated,one abysmally stupid.

First, the frustration, from General John Keane, who was key in persuading President Bush to implement the urge strategy:

“I think it’s an absolute disaster,” said Gen. Keane, who advised Gen. David H. Petraeus when he was top Iraq commander. “We won the war in Iraq, and we’re now losing the peace.”

“Forty-four hundred lives lost,” Gen. Keane said. “Tens of thousands of troops wounded. Over a couple hundred thousand Iraqis killed. We liberated 25 million people. There is only one Arab Muslim country that elects its own government, and that is Iraq.

“We should be staying there to strengthen that democracy, to let them get the kind of political gains they need to get and keep the Iranians away from strangling that country. That should be our objective, and we are walking away from that objective.”

Sorry, General Keane. It is a disaster, but that mistake was set in stone when the Bush Administration decided to rush Iraq into elections with the idea of massaging his fetish of 'Arab Democracy' and empowered Shi'ite politicians with close ties to Iran instead of putting an interim pro-US government in power. Once that happened, the rest was predictable and just a matter of time.

And now the stupidity, from the same article:

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday warned Iran not to miscalculate the U.S. decision to withdraw its troops.

“No one, most particularly Iran, should miscalculate about our continuing commitment to and with the Iraqis going forward,” she said in an interview with CNN from Uzbekistan.

“In addition to a very significant diplomatic presence in Iraq which will carry much of the responsibility for dealing with an independent, sovereign, democratic Iraq, we have bases in neighboring countries, we have our ally in Turkey. We have a lot of presence in that region,” she added.

As if Iran hasn't simply laughed at such pronouncements before? As if Erdogan's Islamist Turkey didn't sabotage our invasion of Iraq in 2003 and hasn't been a conduit for Iran evading the so-called sanctions since then? As if 150 troops guarding an embassy is going to stave off Moqtada al-Sadr and his Iranian armed and trained Shi'ite militia from Lebanonizing Iraq? As if the Iraqis themselves aren't booting us out in response to pressure from Iran?

Unbelievable. And there are people that still want this clueless woman as president.

Another One Bites The Dust - Dem Rep. Cardoza Won't Seek Re-election

California Democrat Dennis Cardoza, a five-termer and prominent member of the so-called conservative-leaning Blue Dog Coalition announced today that he's not going to run for re-election next year.

While Cardoza made some noises about 'the increasingly harsh tone in American politics', the real scoop is that he was re-districted into a much more GOP leaning district and doesn't see good things in his future chances. Cardoza's exit gives the GOP an excellent shot at capturing the seat.

Nobody should miss Dennis Cardoza by the way.He was a weasel and a waste of space.

He got into politics under the wing of Democrat Congressman Gary Condit, who trusted him and made Cardoza his chief of staff. Once Condit was sufficiently wounded by what turned out to be fake gutter press allegation's of Condit's involvement in the death of aide Chandra Levy,Cardoza turned on his one-time benefactor and ended Condit's career by defeating him in the primary.

In one of life's little ironies, while Levy was actually murdered by an illegal alien, Cardoza has been a consistent and reliable shill for the amestia lobby.

He's also supported most of Obama's Agenda, including policies that have destroyed productivity and employment in his own district, which has a large agriculture segment and a current unemployment rate of 17.5%.

Definitely not someone to be missed. Not at all.

While Cardoza made some noises about 'the increasingly harsh tone in American politics', the real scoop is that he was re-districted into a much more GOP leaning district and doesn't see good things in his future chances. Cardoza's exit gives the GOP an excellent shot at capturing the seat.

Nobody should miss Dennis Cardoza by the way.He was a weasel and a waste of space.

He got into politics under the wing of Democrat Congressman Gary Condit, who trusted him and made Cardoza his chief of staff. Once Condit was sufficiently wounded by what turned out to be fake gutter press allegation's of Condit's involvement in the death of aide Chandra Levy,Cardoza turned on his one-time benefactor and ended Condit's career by defeating him in the primary.

In one of life's little ironies, while Levy was actually murdered by an illegal alien, Cardoza has been a consistent and reliable shill for the amestia lobby.

He's also supported most of Obama's Agenda, including policies that have destroyed productivity and employment in his own district, which has a large agriculture segment and a current unemployment rate of 17.5%.

Definitely not someone to be missed. Not at all.
